Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, was presented with the 2017 John V. Field Award by the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) on Tuesday. Journalism students from Grand Ledge assisted in presenting the award to Jones, who was recognized for his work last year advocating for the First Amendment rights of student journalists. Jones sponsored legislation to create the Student Free Press and Civics Readiness Act, specifying that a student journalist would have the right to exercise freedom of speech and of the press in school-sponsored media. The John V. Field Award recognizes a person who is not currently a student media adviser for their significant contributions to scholastic journalism in Michigan. The award was first given in 1972 to John Field, who served as executive director of MIPA for more than 20 years.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, and Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Potterville, welcome retired Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins (center) to the Michigan Capitol on Thursday. Atkins is the current president and CEO of the Military Officers Association of America. The retired Air Force general visited the Capitol as part of a nationwide tour to discuss ongoing military and veterans issues.

Jones and other legislators participated in the 2017 Legislative Polar Plunge to help raise money for Special Olympics Michigan, a nonprofit organization offering year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Jones and other legislators participated in the 2017 Legislative Polar Plunge to help raise money for Special Olympics Michigan, a nonprofit organization offering year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Jones is a member of the Special Olympics Michigan board and participated in his eighth polar plunge. Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and members and staff of the Michigan House and Senate also took the plunge.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, was named 2016 Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Dental Association (MDA) on Friday. MDA President Dr. Larry DeGroat of South Lyon presented the award to Jones in recognition of his efforts to make dental cone beam computer tomography (CT) available to dentists. CT is a new type of X-ray equipment that provides 3-D images of a section of teeth, tissue and nerves in a single scan, reducing radiation exposure and pain for the patient.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, proudly welcomed Mark Hughes to the Capitol on Tuesday night. Hughes is the owner of Jerry’s Barber Shop in Charlotte and accompanied the senator for Gov. Rick Snyder’s 2017 State of the State address. Mark is the son of the late Jerry Hughes, who founded the barbershop. Jones started going to Jerry’s Barbershop 43 years ago and has continued his patronage ever since.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, was joined by Sen. Ken Horn, R-Frankenmuth (left), and Sen. Jim Marleau, R-Lake Orion (right), on Thursday morning to set up a Nativity scene on the east lawn of the Michigan Capitol. Jones encourages the public to come out to see the display. For the next six days, he will make the trip to the Capitol daily to put up the Nativity scene in the morning and then dismantle it each night by 9 p.m., in accordance with Capitol Commission rules.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, and officials from the American Red Cross in Michigan on Wednesday attended a ceremonial bill signing with Gov. Rick Snyder on Jones’ legislation to allow residents to make voluntary donations on their state tax returns in support of the American Red Cross. Joining Jones for the bill signing were Kimberly Burton, CEO – American Red Cross Michigan Region; John H. Cauley, Jr., CEO – Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross; Tiana Gee, CEO – American Red Cross Southwest Michigan; Bill Lukens, American Red Cross State and Community Relations representative; Tony Lasher, CEO – East Central Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross; Mike Mitchell, CEO – American Red Cross of West Michigan; and Jess Averill-Hammond, legislative director for Sen. Jones.
